The role

Working closely with the Director of Operations and other department Heads, the Head of Digital Services will have the following responsibilities:

The immediate focus:

  • Line manage a technical Digital Mastering and Data I/O team
  • Achieve quality targets as set out by Visual Data
  • Ensure the department runs smoothly and that clients' work is delivered efficiently, on time and to a high standard
  • Work closely with the Director of Operations to implement procedures to effectively plan all work going through the area, giving the business a clear overview of utilisation
  • Ensure operating overheads are managed and utilisation of equipment is maximised
  • Plan capacity and staffing for the department.


Principle responsibilities & accountability:

  • Provide strong leadership and staff direction
  • Represent and uphold all department policies and procedures and maintain an exceptional level of service within the Digital department
  • Achieve quality targets set by the platform vendors, broadcasters and Visual Data
  • Maintain an awareness of Visual Data’s clients' core challenges and internal deadlines
  • Be point person for the department and address questions from clients and staff regarding technical specification
  • Act as liaison between Operators and Coordinators
  • Communicate to the Digital and Data Departments any specific needs of clients to ensure the work is completed to spec.
  • Responsible for monitoring Xytech (and future scheduling tools) to ensure work is assigned, deadlines are met and any capacity issues are identified and highlighted
  • Resolve deadline related issues and collaborate with operational departments and client services, towards a timely resolution
  • Maintain and present weekly activity reports to Senior Management
  • Co-ordinate, error review requests, CAR actions and feedback into Senior Management
  • Keeping the team up-to-date with any changes in their requirements
  • Organise and attend on-boarding calls when delivering to new clients
  • Attend and at times lead daily meetings with Operations and Account Managers
  • Work closely with the Director of Operations to identify and recommend improvements in Digital management workflows and processes
  • Work with the Director of Operations and technology to identify areas in your department that would benefit from development, and assist with the design and implementation.

Personnel matters:

  • Responsibility for recruitment and for the management and planning of all staffing and capacity within your area, including the requirement for any short term/freelance effort
  • Staff Performance appraisals, salary reviews and conducting 1-2-1 reviews with your direct reports 
  • Necessary staffing actions in line with company policies
  • Identifying and conducting training for your direct team and providing regular technical and procedure support
  • Ensure all staff holiday and sickness records are maintained. 


Candidate profile

Summary:
The successful candidate must have previous management and leadership experience, gained in an operational environment. 

You’ll possess exceptional co-ordination skills in order to be able to exchange relevant information between Operations, Client Services and external teams. 

You’ll demonstrate an in depth operational knowledge in creating digital-media file formats for VoD Platforms, including the differences, strengths, and weaknesses among formats and a clear understanding of variables related to file types. 

Hands on experience in designing and creating technical workflow along with utilising MAM and DAM databases or any other office based systems is essential in assuring jobs are efficiently processed.


You must have the following:

  • 3+ years' hands on experience in the Broadcast or VOD industry
  • Experience processing and delivering content to major platforms such as Netflix and iTunes 
  • Experience processing and delivering content to major international Broadcasters 
  • A proven technical background and in-depth understanding of V/A compression and mastering techniques
  • Metadata standards & Schemas for all major VOD platforms and  broadcasters (DPP) 
  • Strong analytical skills including experience with reporting systems, data gathering, and data management
  • Strong knowledge of V/A Quality control workflows and processes
  • Fully conversant in editing, transcoding, subtitling and the quality checking of both film and television material
  • Familiarity with a variety of transcoders and mastering tools
  • Extensive experience of Adobe Premier and Final Cut Pro, or Avid Media Composer
  • Prior experience using tools to create captions and subtitles for VOD platforms
  • Competence with a variety of operating systems including Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
