ABOUT US

The New Arab is an English-language website focused on Arab news and current affairs. It is part of a larger media network (Al-Araby Al-Jadeed) with over 140 members of staff around the world and a network of more than 30 correspondents in the region. We have more than 200 leading Arabic writers from different backgrounds contributing to our opinion pages.

 

Al-Araby Al-Jadeed is fast becoming the online news source for millions of Arabs around the world, and has established a reputation for breaking news and for providing compelling and exclusive coverage of the issues that matter in the Arab world and the wider Middle East.   

 

The New Arab seeks to build on the success of al-Araby al-Jadeed by following its news agenda closely and ensuring it benefits from its resources by accessing the extensive pool of reporters and journalists to offer English readers news, views and analysis from the region in a way that nobody else does.


Bi-lingual multimedia journalists are central to The New Arab's success and will be able to ensure that English readers with interests in the region will have access to first-hand news, analysis and commentary from al-Araby al-Jadeed.

 

ABOUT THE ROLE

Objective of the role:

Reporting to the duty editor, you will monitor coverage on the Al-Araby Al-Jadeed Arabic-language website, re-versioning stories into compelling English copy. You will work closely with our reporters around the world, ensuring that coverage of ongoing and breaking news stories reflects latest developments. 

 

Key Responsibilities:  

  • To remain up to date with our Arabic service and ensure that exclusive news and current affairs are also placed  on our website
  • Pulling wire stories and working with translated pieces
  • Working in close coordination with senior editors to determine subjects, angles, styles, etc.
  • Produce high-quality content written in clear English
  • Ensuring that every story reads well with minimal errors
  • To ensure that content produced adheres to our internal style guide
  • To follow moving stories and provide updates, analysis and other ways to engage and inform the audience
  • To be prepared to take on any other role in the newsroom as defined by the duty editor in response to the needs of the newsroom
  • To work with other departments (multimedia, translation, Arabic) in order to enrich content and make sure it adds value to coverage of events.

 

ABOUT YOU

Key Requirements:

  • A full command of Modern Standard Arabic. You will not be required to write in Arabic, but will be required to be able to read, and converse with Arabic sources
  • Native-level English language skills. You are expected to be able to write clearly and accurately with complete comprehension skills
  • The ability to gather and digest information from Arabic sources and produce high-quality copy for immediate publication online
  • Social media awareness and ability to promote published work and engage with audience in appropriate conversational tone
  • An understanding of English language audiences interested in the Arab world
  • To play a key role in editorial meetings, providing new ideas for coverage
  • A thorough understanding of journalism ethics and media law including contempt, libel and copyright
  • Knowledge of key political issues in the region and how it has developed since the Arab Spring
  • Ability to work to a rota of four ten-hour shifts per week, including one overnight shift per week
  • Friendly, informed and passionate about reshaping long-dominant western media narratives surrounding the Middle East
  • Be willing to work regular night shifts
  • Must have full right to work in the UK for the duration of the role.

Desirable:

  • Experience in a reporting or sub-editing role at a national UK newspaper
  • Experience with interactive storytelling design, software and techniques
  • Experience in video production for a recognised media house
  • Experience commissioning feature and commentary writers
  • Experience in an editing and publishing role
  • Experience leading a small team.
